Image Location : The hovercraft crossing the Solent.
Hovertravel, are now the only commercial hovercraft service in the world and they celebrated their 50th anniversary in 2015. The service takes you directly to the beach at Southsea or Ryde, going across the Solent in just 10 minutes. As the quickest way to travel from the mainland to the Isle of Wight and is regularly used by visitors to the Island, as well as commuters heading to and from work. The hovercraft has a well-established history on the Isle of Wight, with the very first craft (invented by Sir Christopher Cockerell) being manufactured on the island in the late 1950s.
The official terminology for a hovercraft journey over the water is “flying” not “sailing”, so remember when you’ve travelled on it you can tell your family and friends you just took a 10-minute flight to the Isle of Wight!
This image was captured shortly after sunrise using a Panasonic Lumix GX8 with a Lumix DG 100-400mm F/4.0-6.3 lens set to 280mm (equivalent to 560mm on a full frame camera). The camera was hand held from a ferry boat using autofocus on the hovercraft. The camera was set to Aperture Priority f/8 giving a 1/1000th of a second exposure at ISO 200 with daylight white balance. The RAW processing and final adjustments were all done in Photoshop CC.
