Bronze Miner

Location: A seven feet tall bronze Miner in Cardiff Bay. Entitled ‘From Pit to Port’ the sculpture celebrates the industrial heritage of the South Wales coalfields community and the close links with the Cardiff port which exported the black gold across the world. It was unveiled in July 2005 and sculpted by the late John Clinch of Tregaron and completed by Jon Buck of Bath. The bright light in the background is an old lightship which is now a café.

This image was captured around 8:30pm using a tripod-mounted Canon 5DmkII camera with a Canon EF 24~105mm F/4L IS lens set at 24mm. I used Liveview and 10x magnification to manually focus on the miner. The camera was set to manual exposure mode, f/11, ISO 800, and daylight white balance. I then captured a series of 11 exposures from 30 seconds all the way to 1/30th of a second in one-stop increments. The “blue” light on the miner is electronic flash that I “hand popped” from camera left during each exposure. The RAW processing, creating and saving the HDRI was all done in Photoshop CS/5. The HDRI was then opened and tone mapped in Photomatix Pro before the final clean-up and image correction/enhancement work was done back in Photoshop.
