Native Welsh Red Kite that has just picked up a strip of beef.

Location: the kite is being fed at Gigrin Farm in Rhadayer, mid-Wales which is an official red kite feeding station. The kites are extremely fast and do not like to be on the ground, so when they think it is safe they swoop down and grab a bit of beef. Usually other birds like crows need to be seen on the ground feeding before the kites will swoop down. All the other spectators and I are in a large wooden hide trying to sit quietly as we observe them over the span of two to three hours in the late afternoon.

This image was captured using a tripod-mounted Canon 7D camera with a Canon 300mm F/2.8L lens. I used servo focus to follow the kite. The camera was set to manual exposure mode, 1/2000th second, f/5.6, ISO 800, and daylight white balance. The RAW processing, editing and saving the image was all done in Photoshop CS/5.
