Location : Freshwater Bay on the Isle of Wight.
Incidentally Dimbola Lodge is located in Freshwater, the home of the celebrated Victorian photographer, Julia Margaret Cameron.
This was yesterday morning and it was the start of Winter Storm Jonas, the same one that triggered record snowfall in the eastern USA.
This image was captured at least 30 minutes before the official sunrise time and still quite dark to my eyes when I locked the shutter open for over 4 minutes using a 10-stop filter on the lens. The long exposure has smoothed out the rough sea and brought some colour into it. There would not have been enough light to freeze the violent wave action even with a high ISO at this time of the morning.
This image was captured at dawn using a tripod-mounted Canon 5DmkIII camera and a Canon EF16-35mm f/2.8 L lens set to 35mm and focused on the hyper-focal point. The camera was set to Bulb with a 262-second exposure at f/5.6, ISO 100 and daylight white balance. The RAW processing and final adjustments were all done in Photoshop CC.
