Blue Moon over the Needles

Location : Alum Bay on the Isle of Wight

The Needles are the most westerly tip of the island. This is the Blue Moon which only happens once every three years; it has nothing to do with the colour but is simply the name of the second full moon in one calendar month. The Needles is a row of three distinctive stacks of chalk that rise out of the sea with the Needles Lighthouse at the far end of the stack.

This image was captured at 5:20am to catch the full moon setting just as the sun was rising behind me. I was using a tripod-mounted Canon 5DmkIII camera and a Canon EF 100-400mm f/4.5 L lens set to 100mm. I used Live View focusing at 10x on the yacht below. The camera was set to 1/4 of a second exposure at f/8, ISO 100 and daylight white balance. The RAW processing and final adjustments were all done in Photoshop CC.
